Overcoming Challenges in Public Speaking: A Journey of Self-Improvement

Abstract
This study delves into the journey of overcoming challenges in public speaking, focusing on the common experience of Public Speaking Anxiety (PSA) that affects 77% of individuals. This anxiety often prevents students from expressing their thoughts clearly, especially among English language learners who face additional language barriers. The research emphasizes strategies to manage and reduce PSA, including reflective practice, real-world exposure, and innovative approaches like Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET). Furthermore, the role of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) in improving public speaking performance is highlighted, as students with higher EQ tend to manage their emotions better and gain confidence. Interviews with students from UIN K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid Pekalongan reveal both their struggles and the progress they have made in overcoming their fears. Despite these challenges, public speaking offers significant benefits, such as improved self-confidence, enhanced critical thinking, and better communication skills. The study underscores that with proper preparation, constructive feedback, and resilience, public speaking anxiety can be transformed into a tool for self-improvement. By employing supportive teaching methods and practical strategies, educators can help students face their fears, develop stronger communication skills, and embark on a path of personal growth.
