Abstract

Language interference refers to the errors, interruptions or interventions that occur when influences from the first language affect the second language (English). This study aims to identify and analyze Javanese language interference on the target language (English) four English consonant sound ( /r/ /p/ /b/ /d/) in pronunciation, focusing on students enrolled in the English Study Program at the Faculty of Languages and Culture, University of 17 Agustus 1945, Semarang. A qualitative approach is employed, utilizing the theory of language interference proposed by Uriel Weinrich. Data is collected through observations and interviews via WhatsApp voice notes from five Javanese English students during their English communication. The results of this study indicate that one student successfully pronounces/r/, /p/, /b/, and /d/ d/sounds, while four students continued to exhibit characteristics of their first language (Javanese). Many students struggle to pronounce certain sounds in English and use Javanese-influenced sentence structures due to the dominance of their first language (Javanese). Other challenges include linguistic backgrounds, phonetic differences, cultural factors, limited exposure to English, and non-linguistic factors. Although students know these interferences, they often find it challenging to correct them in practice. Learners can apply training in English phonetics, minimal pair practice, practice with English consonants and speech shadowing. This study provides valuable information for teachers and curriculum developers to design more effective teaching methods and assist students in overcoming difficulties they may encounter. Understanding the interaction between these two languages can offer insights into the challenges faced by second-language speakers in mastering proper pronunciation.
