Rapunzel Reimagined: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Gender Representation in Tangled
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study examines gender representation in the animated film Tangled through the lens of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), applying Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework. It analyzes how linguistic and visual elements contribute to the construction of male and female character portrayals, while also investigating whether these representations uphold or challenge traditional gender norms. Drawing on Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity and feminist media critiques, the research explores the dialogues, actions, and visual designs that shape the characters’ identities. The findings reveal that Tangled presents a complex portrayal of gender: Rapunzel evolves into an independent and empowered protagonist, reflecting progressive shifts in the depiction of femininity. However, the film simultaneously maintains traditional masculine stereotypes through the character of Flynn Rider. This duality illustrates the tension between modern ideals and enduring norms in animated storytelling. The study underscores the importance of critically engaging with media narratives, highlighting how films like Tangled both reflect and influence societal perceptions of gender roles in contemporary culture.
