Abstract

This article analyzes the plot structure in the fictional work The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, since it takes up the objective theory perspective that was proposed by M.H. Abrams, William Patrick Kenney’s framework for the analysis of fiction, also the plot theories of E.M. Forster and Gustav Freytag. The research focuses upon plot elements that are examined, like exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. The study aims at understanding Franz Kafka’s distinctive writing style, in terms of plot development in the novella, which is famous for its absurd undertones, by using The Metamorphosis as a case study. The analysis begins with an exposition of it. It introduces Gregor Samsa along with his transformation. Next to be introduced are his sister Grete and his mother and father. Due to conflict inside the plot, the Samsa family members grew estranged and tense, and this culminated in a tragic resolution where Gregor was isolated and abandoned until he died. It seems that the Samsa family is presented as moving on in a happy manner at the story’s end. Gregor is excluded from their future plans. Through this analysis the researcher reveals how the story is both absurd as well as deeply meaningful because the story uses a complex with a detailed plot structure.
