Analyzing Educational Messages in the Music Videos of Semar dan Pasukan Monyet: A Multimodal Discourse Approach
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study examines children's music videos from the album Semar dan Pasukan Monyet by Ardhito Pramono, which focuses on the collaboration between song lyrics and visual elements to reveal the messages in each song and the children's album. This study applied multimodal analysis (MDA) by Kress and van Leeuwen as its theoretical framework that explores multimodal acts of how the concept of the relationship between lyrics and visuals contributes through redundancy, complementarity, and contradiction to convey video messages. This study also examines the concept of visualization in the form of salience and framing by Kress and van Leeuwen in perfecting the message. This study analyzed all seven songs in the album that use video screenshots in data collection, focusing on repetitive lyrics and supporting visuals. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach to analyze and describe the collaboration of lyrical and visual elements and explain how multimodal elements work. The educational messages in each video are learning through play, environmental conservation, friendship, and healthy living. These findings are also supported by Jean Piaget's theory about cognitive development in children to determine an understanding of how music videos can serve as effective educational tools for children.
