Impoliteness Strategies in Instagram Comments on Football Match Results: A Pragmatic Analysis
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research examines impoliteness strategies in Instagram comments responding to football match outcomes, using Jonathan Culpeper’s theoretical framework. The study identifies five types of impoliteness: bald on record, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mock impoliteness, and withhold impoliteness. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, 35 user comments were collected from the Instagram account @espnfc, focusing on selected match result posts. The analysis found bald on record impoliteness to be the most frequently used strategy, while withhold impoliteness appeared the least. The findings suggest that users tend to express disagreement and criticism directly, influenced by emotional involvement in football and the nature of digital interaction. This study provides insights into online communication behaviour, particularly in sports discourse, and highlights the role of anonymity, digital engagement, and fan rivalry in shaping impolite language use on social media platforms.
