Abstract

This research investigates Peter Newmark’s translation techniques in the Indonesian subtitles of the animated movie Inside Out 2. Translating subtitles of animated movies has its challenges for translators as they need to accurately relay psychological concepts, humor, and cultural elements when translating from English to Indonesian. The research uses a descriptive method of study by investigating pairs of English dialogues and the Indonesian subtitles which contained psychological terms, idioms, jokes, or cultural elements. The study provided the identification location and the classification of the translations based on Newmark’s theory of techniques like literal translation, altering the order of words, altering meaning slightly, cultural equivalents, and paraphrasing. The findings showed that translators used a variety of methods in order to maintain the original meaning, emotional mood, and cultural significance to Indonesian viewers. Techniques like communicative translation and adaptation often maintained to keep the meaning and humor of the message clear. This study gives us research into the world of their subtitle-making of animated films and gives practical implications for translators in terms of dealing with emotional translation and cultural differences.
