Abstract

This research aims to present the figurative language used in songs by Henry Modie. The writer only researched them because the four songs are the most popular compared to the other. The four songs the writer analyzes are Drunk Text, You Were There for Me, Closure, and Fight or Flight. This study identifies the types of figurative language in Henry Moodie's songs and analyzes their meanings. Using the theories of the linguist Leech (1981), this study aims to uncover how these figurative elements contribute to the overall meaning and emotional depth of Henry Modie’s song. This study employs qualitative analysis to identify and interpret the meanings of metaphor, personification, hyperbole, simile, irony, litotes, and metonymy in the lyrics. The study demonstrates how figurative language reinforces the emotional and aesthetic depth of the songs. The findings of this study demonstrate that, in each song, which reflects different emotional themes, Henry Modie's song lyrics explore profound emotional themes such as friendship, loss, and healing, which are expressed through lyrics and melodies. This research is expected to increase the understanding of the relationship between language, emotion, and music.
